Safe and Effective Candle Burning Guidelines
Quick-Start Checklist
- Light and establish full melt pool
- Burn 3–4 hours max per session
- Extinguish with a snuffer, not a gust of breath
- Relight with the candle cooled and wick trimmed
- Keep out of reach of children and pets
- Ensure a clear, safe burn area free of flammables
Before Lighting your OC Scent Co. Candle
Choose the right space for your Candle
Larger rooms may benefit from multiple smaller candles or larger diameter vessels designed for open-air burn.
Prepare the environment
Place on a stable, heat-resistant, non flammable surface away from drafts, curtains, paper, and flammables.
Keep children and pets at a safe distance.
Burn surface and ventilation
Ensure good air exchange but avoid strong drafts that can cause uneven burning or flare-ups.
First Burn
Goal: establish a full melt pool (FMP) across the entire surface
Light the candle and let it burn long enough to melt the wax to the edge of the container. This usually takes 1–2 hours for small jars, longer for larger vessels.
The melt pool should reach the edges within the first burn; otherwise, you risk tunnelling.
Tips during the first burn
Do not blow out the candle abruptly; snuff or use a wick-dipper to avoid smoke and wick damage.
Observe for uneven burning or wick drift; if you notice issues, extinguish safely and trim the wick.
Ongoing Burning Best Practices
Burn duration per session
For most candles, limit burns to 3–4 hours at a time. Do not burn more than 4 hours in one sitting for safety and wax integrity.
Allow the candle to cool completely (at least 1 hour) before relighting to prevent excessive heat buildup.
Wick care
Keep the wick trimmed to 1/4 inch (6 mm). Long wicks can cause high flames and soot.
- If a wick starts to mushroom (blackened tip), gently trim after extinguishing and cooling.
Even burning
Each burn should establish and maintain a full melt pool to prevent tunnelling and to create a uniform “centre” for a clean edge.
- If a candle starts to drift or run toward one side, straighten it during the cool-down by gently lifting and re-centering the wick, then re-align at the surface.
Containment and heat
Use a candle snuffer to extinguish, not blowing, to minimize soot and heat shock.
If the container becomes very hot to the touch, allow it to cool fully and move it away from combustibles.
Safety Essentials
Never leave a burning candle unattended. Extinguish before leaving a room or going to bed.
Keep candles at least 12 inches (30 cm) away from anything flammable.
Positioning and heat protection
Place on heat-resistant surfaces and away from windows that could cause drafts or sun exposure.
Avoid placing candles under shelves, curtains, or overhangs.
Reusability
Once the candle is finished, you can extend the joy by scooping out the remainder of the wax and place in the hessian bag your candle arrived in and use as a scenting freshener in your car or home.
Re-use containers for decorative purposes or repurpose the wax remnants into new blends if you have the right equipment and safety considerations.
